Marvesta's commitment to sustainability
Aquaculture is becoming increasingly important on a global scale as wild fisheries are depleted and the demand for seafood product grows. From our infancy, we have been 100% committed to making Marvesta the most sustainable shrimp farm in the world. We are honored to be recognized as the leader in sustainable shrimp production and are dedicated to enhancing our vision through continued innovation. Marvesta's sustainable shrimp systems have the ability to maintain or increase production long term with out jeopardizing the environment or the associated ecosystems.
Our definition of sustainability is characterized by 3 essential components: Environmental Responsibility, Social Responsibility, and Economic Responsibility.
Most notably, we have focus on developing technology around environmentally responsible principles. It was our goal to alleviate the environmental concerns that have hampered traditional shrimp farm globally. We have successfully reduced the geographic footprint to a fraction of outdoor pond culture. It takes the rest of the world 450 acres to achieve what we can produce on 5. Even more significantly, with our system, there is no need to be on or near the coast. In addition to reducing the land requirement, it was our goal to limit the usage of natural resources. Our recirculating system produces no effluent and there is no discharge of water into the environment. We recycle our water, thereby limiting the use of water to the bare minimum. We are on the forefront of renewable energy use, having used solar technologies to reduce the dependencies on electricity and fossil fuels. Given that we are located 60 miles from the coast and produce no waste or effluent, we have eliminated any degradation of coastlines and the ecosystems surrounding them. By developing a system indoors and in tanks, we have effectively replicated the natural environment and have eliminated the Wild Catch Dilemma surrounding "By-Catch" and "Over Fishing".
From a social responsibility standpoint, we have focused our efforts to produce the healthiest shrimp available. Through operating indoors, we have removed the need to use any Hormones, Antibiotics, or Chemicals. We manage a completely biosecure facility therefore preventing any disease or virus entering our facility. This process allows for the cleanest and healthiest shrimp to be produced. Our clean and green process is complimented by a harvesting and packing process that is free of any additives or preservative which is unlike most shrimp consumed in the United States. It is also a priority of ours to support local produces, including those farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania that produce the components of our feed. It is also our hope that through developing this replicable system, we are able to offer shrimpers and waterman alike, an alternative method of production to supplement the other fisheries they are involved with.
To often the economic aspect of sustainability is left out of most definitions. A business or process can not be sustainable if it is not economic viable. Unlike any shrimp facility in the world, we are able to produce fresh, natural, premium shrimp 365 days a year. There is no more seasonality associated with shrimp harvesting, utilizing our process. This allows us to constantly adjust to market demands as well as economic crisis. We are also proud to help our local economies through job creation and increased commerce.
Although we are very committed to our mission and vision, Marvesta works closely with groups such as FishWise to help promote, advocate, and develop sustainable standards for shrimp production throughout the United States. FishWise is a non-profit organization designed to improve the sustainability and financial performance of seafood retailers, distributors, and producers. Uniquely positioned between the seafood industry and marine conservation organizations, FishWise offers a range of services that create trust between seafood vendors and their customers, enabling businesses to sell more sustainable seafood, more profitably.
